Dobson Producers and Marketing Organization (PMO), is located in Dobson, a district of Coleyville, in the parish of Manchester. It started in 1999 out of a need that farmers in the area had in getting their products sold because there was a glut. The excess of produce resulted in the farmers having to find ways to market their products through the farmers’ market. The organization sells mainly vegetables and ground provisions on a wholesale basis. The Dobson PMO provides technical advice through RADA and other entities striving for the best farming practices. On the rare occasion, we also offer services such as storage space in time of excess. We also source products during a scarcity, and offer financial advice on loans for farmers. The organization is managed by an executive body that is headed by Miss Sheila Baines – President, and Mr. Paul Williamson – Vice President.
Dobson PMO is a registered farmers group with Jamaican Agricultural Society (JAS) and the Rural Agricultural and Development Authority (RADA). We also a proud member of the People’s Cooperative Credit Union (PC Bank).
The initiative has been going on fairly well with a few exceptions. The Dobson PMO currently has over fifty (50) members and has regular monthly meetings. The organization is a non-profit and does not generate any form of income except for the dues that members pay at meetings. The aim of the organization is to:
Increase the capacity of farmers to improve the diversity, productivity, and/or sustainability of their agricultural production (climate smart agriculture)
Increase the capacity of farmers to generate agriculture-related income.
Strengthen the capacity of agriculture focused organizations, like the Dobson PMO to achieve our mission.
In 2013, the organization received some equipment from Digicel foundation to assist the farmers in weighing and storing their products. However, the organization is in need of more equipment and financial assistance.
